  • What is an Artificial Eye?
    It is a prosthetic unit which replace the lost orbital space when the living eye is either shrunken or has been surgically removed. Its front surface simulates the lost eye and matches to the companion eyeof the patient.

  • Will I be able to see with an ocular prosthesis?
    This is not an unusual question.Unfortunately the answer is no. The prosthesis however will assist in insuring a relief of undue stress and tesnsion on the lids and help with alignment of the face.

  • How long does an Ocular Prosthesis last?
    In general, plastic artificial eyes eyes, last for a long time when properly made and cared for. A replacement is required every 4 to 5 years, because of bony orbit development early in life, and/or tissue changes in adult life.much is also dependent on the nature of the patient and their particular needs.

  • What is the process to procure a custom fitted artificial eye?
    Patients are referred for an ocular prosthesis by their eye doctor or surgeon. Appointments would then be arranged for the following procedures initial evaluation, impression moulding, prosthetic model fitting, coloring matching of the iris, sclera and vascular pattern simulation, and fitting of the completed prosthesis.

  • Is it neccessary to return to the Ocular Prosthetist for future visits?
    Yes, you should have routine follow-up visits to determine if your prosthesis needs to be reglazed, or if an adjustment,polishing or a replacement is required. This is particularly the case in children and younger patients as their facial structure will change as they grow older.

  • What does an Ocular Prosthesist do?
    An Ocular Prosthesist is a carefully trained technician skilled in the arts of creating, fitting, shaping, and painting ocular prostheses. In addition to creating it, the Ocular Prosthesist shows the patient how to handle and care for the prosthesis, and provides long-term care through periodic examinations and follow up care.
